Frequently Asked Questions
These are some of the most
commonly asked questions :
Is there a cure for
hair loss?
There are many different kinds of hair loss,
with varying causes. From people complaining of thinning hair, falling
hair, receding hairline or bald patches.
When it comes to
dealing with loss of hair correctly, the Trichologist must determine the
type of hair loss and term the problem reversable or non
reversible.
Once this is determined then appropriate treatment
can be advised. Some forms of hair loss can be termed as semi reversible
in that the loss may be slowed but not reversed. There are hundreds of
treatments on the market that claim to reverse or cure hair loss,
caution needs to be taken when embarking on this kind of
treatment.
The best course of action is to visit a registered
Trichologist.
I have an itchy flaky scalp and have tried numerous shampoo's but
nothing helps what can I do?
You may be suffering from a specific
skin/scalp disorder, which needs to be properly managed beyond the scope
of the shampoo. It could also be the result of an allergic reaction.
Trichological advice is recommended to make a correct
diagnosis.
My hair is dry and brittle even though I use conditioner what can I
do?
If you have other symptoms an underlying cause needs to be
determined or ruled out first. Then an assessment needs to be made on
your diet, lifesyle and hair care. Advice can then be given on
appropriate hair care and products which may include lifestyle
changes.
How often should I wash my hair?
Washing the hair more often
is actually better for the hair than most people think! If you use the
correct products suitable for your hair type and lifestyle, the hair can
be washed daily and it should always look it's best.
Why does my hair always
look dull even after shampooing and conditioning?
Signs of poor
health can be reflected in your hair as well as poor hair care.
Many
factors can contribute to dull and lifeless hair including illness,
medication, poor diet or all three! Poor nutrition or malabsorbtion of
vitamins and minerals even if you consider your diet to be healthy, is
usually the most likely cause.
My hair does not grow. It has been like
that for 13 years .Will cutting make it grow?
We can not be
exact with the information provided. But hair always grows - about 1 cm
per month. If it is not growing long it means that the hairs are staying
in the skin for a shorter time. Cutting will not change
this.
Why do men lose their hair on the top of their heads and
not the sides?
It is obviously evolutionary and hereditary.
Those who get significant baldness on the top have hair roots/follicles
that are programmed to make the hairs smaller in response to normal male
hormones, in particular are called dihydrotestosterone.
My hair grows very
slow- in fact it doesn't grow at all. I had a hair cut 2 years ago and
my hair has grown about 3 cm since then. What should I
do?
The rate of growth varies but little FROM person to
person. If it is not 'growing' this means that each hair only stays in
the scalp for a very short time (normally up to 5 years). There are
various nutritional (iron deficiency), hormonal and local scalp
disorders that may contribute to this- a trichologist or dermatologist
could readily clarify this.
WHY DOES HAIR LOSS AND BALDNESS INCREASES
THE RISK OF HEART ATTACK?
People suffering hair loss and baldness
seem to have a greater number of androgen receptors in their scalps and
androgens and testosterone over production may contribute to both
atherosclerosis, a build up of fatty deposits and high cholestorel in
the arteries, and thrombosis, a susceptibility to blood clots, In
addition, both heart disease and baldness may be traits that are
inherited together.
HOW QUICKLY DOES HAIR GO ONCE IT BEGINS?
It
depends how early you start to lose your hair, and how well you take
care of it once hair loss starts, if you start to lose hair when you are
17 or 18, and do nothing about it, you will probably be bald by the time
you are 25 whereas if you are 35 or 40, the chances are, if you take
care of your hair, you will retain a reasonable head of hair into old
age.
MY DADS GOT A FULL HEAD OF HAIR - AM I SAFE?
Unfortunately
not. Hair loss male pattern baldness is hereditary, but in 90% of cases,
the rouge gene comes from the mothers side.
My daughter is 2 ½ years old. In the past
few months, we have noticed thinning on the top of her scalp and it
seems to be thinning daily is there any information ?
There are
too many possible causes to mention them all-she may need to see a
dermatologist to get an exact diagnosis. Has she had any fever recently
( common reversible cause); does it run in the family?; is the scalp
normal. She may have to have an A/T Ratio and microscopy of plucked
hairs.
